Keloids are overgrown scars that occur after surgery. Even minor trauma or surgery can precipitate a keloid. In this series of photos, a young black woman developed a keloid in her right ear after ear piercing. Surgical excision followed by local injections of a steroid lead to a very satisfying outcome. Keloids are most common in people of African American and Hispanic ethnicity.
